Choose how to have the conversation

Online or in person: which route fits?

Think about where you can talk freely, how you want to ask questions and how you would manage a further visit. Both routes begin with a conversation about your needs.

What would each route involve?

Talking from home

Find out if you would meet live or send your information to be reviewed later. Think about a private space, your connection and how you will ask more questions.

  • Who will review my information?
  • How do I speak with that person again?
  • What happens if I need an examination?

Going to a clinic

Ask who you will see and what the visit includes. Think about travel, time away from work and whether later visits would be in the same place.

  • Will the person who writes my prescription be at this visit?
  • What do I need to bring?
  • Can follow-up happen another way?

Choose a care setting

Does online care mean a lighter check?

No: Maryland holds online and in-person visits to an equal standard of care, as checked September 28, 2026.

Before treating or prescribing online, your care professional must assess your health and the concern you have brought to them. If you need care in person, they must provide it or arrange it with someone else.

Convenience alone cannot show that a proposed medicine suits your needs. Ask the person treating you to explain that choice.

Where can I start looking?

Consider a licensed online medical service or an in-person medical practice. You can start by talking with your usual doctor or other person who treats you about your health concern.

Before you commit, ask what type of licence your prospective prescriber holds and request their full name. Ask about the medicine, total cost and care after the visit whichever route you choose.
